Kerala’s cultural heritage is a rich mosaic shaped by various historical and external influences. Ancient Dravidian traditions are deeply rooted in the region, with early Vedic art and practices laying a strong foundation. The Chera Dynasty, one of the ancient Tamil kingdoms, played a crucial role in shaping the region’s early history.

Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial influences have also left a lasting impact, particularly in architecture and cuisine. The spread of Indian Ocean trade brought influences from the Arab world and China, enriching Kerala’s cultural and economic landscape.

Kerala is notable for its Ayurvedic traditions, which have been practiced here for centuries and are integral to the region’s wellness tourism. The classical dance forms of Kathakali and Mohiniyattam originated here, reflecting the state’s rich artistic heritage. Sanskrit and Tamil literary works, along with the famed Malayalam language, are also central to Kerala’s cultural identity.
